Nokia 3330 - Firmware 1.01 by RetroHack gsm

RetroHack Firmware 1.01 adds new games and settings to the Nokia 3330.

1. Introduction

The Nokia 3330 has 4 MB of flash memory, twice as much as the Nokia 3310.

Using the extend_3310.nrx script, I modified the Nokia 3310 firmware to run on the Nokia 3330.
This gave me an additional 2 MB of free memory and room to add new features.

The biggest drawback of using the Nokia 3310 firmware is that you lose the WAP browser, but I think the extra features are worth it.

I used the additional memory for games and a file system.
The firmware also includes several changes to the phone’s basic functions.

The battery and signal indicators now show seven levels.
You can also start the phone without a SIM card.
In this mode, however, you cannot lock the keypad.

The firmware includes four languages: English, Polish, Hungarian and Romanian.

2. Sounds and vibration

I removed the factory ringtones and moved them to the file system.
I also added new ringtones there.

I added the Ringtones folder function to the Tones menu.
It lets you select a folder containing ringtones in *.re format.
Files from the selected folder will appear under Ringing tone.

I also added Vibration power to the Tones menu.

3. Games

The firmware contains 31 games in total.
Four are original games, and I added the other 27.

3.3. Games I wrote

I created these two games with help from Claude and Codex:

• Bounce

  This port of the popular Bounce game includes 11 original levels with minor changes.

  
• Xonix

  In Xonix, you claim sections of the board while avoiding enemies.

  

3.4. Gamebuino Classic ports

The Gamebuino Classic used a display also found in Nokia phones.
This made it easy for me to bring several games to DCT3.
I also wrote these ports with help from Claude and Codex:

• Fire

  You move a stretcher and bounce people jumping from a burning building. Get them to the ambulance and do not let them hit the ground.

  FireBuino! was created by Luis Alejandro Domínguez Bueno (LADBSoft), with new graphics by Erico Patricio Monteiro. It is a remake of Fire! for the Nintendo Game & Watch from 1980. The FireBuino! code is licensed under LGPL-3.0-only.

• Gruniożerca

  Press key 5 to change Grunio's colour. Catch food that matches his current colour. Three mistakes end the game.

  The original NES game was created by Łukasz Kur and Ryszard Brzukała. The Gamebuino version was written by Polish YouTuber Arkadiusz “Dark Archon” Kamiński, creator of the arhn.eu YouTube channel. Neko created the logo.

  
• Skier

  You ski down an endless slope, dodge trees and jump over logs. The course is generated at random.

  The original Skibuino was created by Mike Del Pozzo. License: GPL-3.0-or-later.

• Solitaire

  This is Klondike solitaire with draw-one and draw-three modes. The game supports undo and saved games.

  The Gamebuino version was created by Andy O'Neill. License: MIT.

  
• Super Crate Box

  You collect weapon crates and fight off waves of enemies. The port includes five maps and 13 weapons.

  Vlambeer created the original game. Aurélien Rodot created the Super Crate Buino version. The Gamebuino port code is available under the LGPL-3.0-or-later license.

• Video Poker

  You play five-card Jacks or Better poker. Set your bet, hold selected cards and draw replacements for the rest.

4. Net Monitor

I enabled the built-in Net Monitor, which displays network information.

5. Files

Files is a browser for the contents of the file system.
You can use it to browse and delete files.
It contains ringtones, animated screen savers and welcome animations.

You can transfer your own files to the phone over an FBUS or MBUS cable using NokiXfiler.exe from the NokiX Tools package.

6. Add-ons

You will find the new features in the Add-ons menu:

• Animated screen saver - lets you select a screen saver stored in the file system,

• Welcome animation - lets you select an animation stored in the file system,

• Rhythmic backlight - controls the backlight in time with the sound,

• Invert colours - displays a negative image,

• Menu appearance - lets you choose the original Nokia animations or Modified Menu 1. I want to add more menu animations in future revisions.

  

• Light settings - let you choose automatic mode, always on or always off,

• LCD contrast - changes the display contrast. This feature may not work with some displays.

• Thermometer - shows the temperature reported by the battery thermistor. It may not work with some cheap replacement batteries.

• SIM-lock code calculator - calculates unlock codes for DCT3, DCT4 and other phone models,

• SMS Bomber - lets you send many identical messages in a row,

• SMS Virus - lets you send a text message that freezes some older phones,

• Soft Info - displays information about the firmware.

7. Flashing the phone

The file contains a complete phone memory image.
The IMEI in the image is cleared.

Back up the entire memory of your Nokia 3330 before flashing.
After flashing, overwrite the cleared IMEI with the number assigned to your phone.
Then recalculate the checksums.
Finally, restore the factory settings.

Do not disconnect the phone while flashing.

8. Summary

The Nokia 3330 retains the simplicity of the original but gains 27 new games.
I am particularly proud of the Bounce port.
I also added new ringtones and screen savers, Net Monitor and additional features.

The DCT3 emulator let me test changes without constantly flashing the phone.
It made development much faster and more convenient.
